Together with this, as of mid-January, provinces over the country also cultivated 176,600 ha of maize, equaling 83.3%; 58,000 ha of sweet potato, equaling 107.7%; 45,500 ha of soybean, equaling 49.4%; and 289,000 ha of vegetables, equaling 111.6% against the same period last year.

Long cold weather killed many old bufalos, oxen and calves in some provinces in the North, particularly in the mountainous region. As of this time, 520 bufalos and oxen died. Some provinces having many animals died like: Bac Kan 150 died and Cao Bang 100 died. The country’s bufalos and oxen were estimated to decreased by 4% against the same period in 2012.

Forestry

In January, dispersed planted trees reached 561,200, rose 0.3percent from the same period in 2012; round wood production 365,000 m3, rose 8.6%; firewood production 2.54 million Ste, rose 3.3%.

According to survey, total damaged forest area was 20.8 ha, 2.8 times greater than the figures in the same period in 2012, of which burnt area was 9 ha; destroyed area was 11.8 ha.

Fishery

January’s estimated fishing production reached 376,100 tons, rose 3.3% from last year’ same period, of which there were 281,700 tons of fish, increased by 2.1% and 33,200 tons of shrimp by 2.5%. January’s estimated farmed products reached 170,600 tons, decreased by 0.8% against last year’ same period, of which there were 125,000 tons of fish, fell by 3% and 23.500 tons of shrimp, rose by 2.2%.

January’s estimated caught products reached 205,500 tons, rose 6.9percent from the same period in 2012, of which thewre were 157,000 tons of fish, rose 6.5percent and 9,700 tons of shrimp, rose 3.2percent.

Industry

January’s s Industrial Production Index (IPI) was estimated to rise 21.1percent from last year’ same period. The mining and quarrying rose 4.7percent, contributed 0.1 point percent to the general growth; the manufacturing by 26.3%, and 18.6 points percent; the power by 20.7% and 1.4 points percent; the water supply and wastes treatment by 10.3% and 1 point percent respectively.

Notably,  January this year was the month just before traditional Tet but the IPI decreased by 3.2% against December and in all one digit industries, of which the mining and quarrying decreased by 4.7%; the manufacturing by 3.0%; the power by 1.0%; the water supply and wastes treatment by 0.4%). This showed that the industry still met difficulties and the needs for industrial products consumption for Tet of this year were low.

Consumption index for the manufacturing in December 2012 rose 4percent from last year’ same period and by 3.2% from November. Generally, the manufacturing’s consumption index in 2012 rose 3.7percent from 2011.

Stock index as of 01/01/2013 rose 21.5percent from last year’ same period. The rate of stock in trade value as of 01/01/2013 compared to the value of produced goods in 2012 was 6.9%.

Manpower in industrial enterprises was as follows: laborers working in industrial enterprises as of 01/01/2013 rose 5.2percent from last year’ same period, of which labors working in state-owned enterprises rose 0.6percent; in non-state enterprises decreased by 2.2% and in FDI enterprises rose 12.4percent. As of this period, laborers working in the mining and quarrying reduced 1.3percent from last year’ same period; in the manufacturing rose 5.9percent; in the power rose 1.2percent and in the water supply and wastes treatment rose 3.7percent.

Investment

January’s realized investment capital from the state budget reached estimated 12.772 trillion dongs, equaling 6.5% of the yearly budget plan and rose 17.9percent from the same period in 2012. . Of which, capital under central management was 2.501 trillion dongs, equaling 5.3% of the yearly budget plan and rose 1.1 percent from the same period in 2012; capital under local management was 10.271 trillion dongs, 6.9% and 22.9% respectively.

January’s Attracted FDI reached 281.5 million USD, rose74percent from last year’ same period. Of which, the registered capital of 37 newly licensed projects was 257.1 million USD (reduced 9.8% by licensed projects and rose 293.6% by capital against the same period last year); additional registered capital of 9 times of projects licensed from previous years was 24.3 million USD. January’s realized FDI reached estimated 420 million USD, rose 5% from the same period in 2012.

In January 2013, attracted FDI of the mining and quarrying reached 203 million USD, represented 72.1% of total registered capital; the real estate business reached 50 million USD, represented 17.8%; other industries reached 28.5 million USD, represented 10.1%.

Total Government revenues from the beginning of the year to 15/01/2013 were at an estimation of 25.7 trillion dongs, equaling 3.1% of the yearly estimate, of which revenues from domestic activities were 17.5 trillion dongs, equaling 3.2%; from crude oil 3 trillion dongs, equaling 3%; from export-import balances 5 trillion dongs, equaling 3% of the yearly estimate. Of the domestic revenues, receiving from state owned enterprises was 6.1 trillion dongs, equaling 3.5%; from FDI enterprises (excluding crude oil) 3.6 trillion dongs, equaling 3.4%; from non-state industrial, commercial and service taxes 4.3 trillion dongs, equaling 3.6%; from individual high income taxes 1.4 trillion dongs, equaling 2.6%; from environment protection taxes 380 billion dongs, equaling 2.7%; from other fees 185 billion dongs, equaling 1.8% of the yearly estimate.

Total Government expenditures from beginning of the year to 15/01/2013 reached estimated 33.9 trillion dongs, equaling 3.5% of the yearly estimate, of which spending for investment and development was 5.1 trillion dongs, equaling 2.9% (spending for capital construction only was 5 trillion dongs, equaling 2.9%); for economic and social development, national defense and security 24.3 trillion dongs, equaling 3.7%; for paying debts and aids 4.6 trillion dongs, equaling 4.3% of the yearly estimate.

Total retailed sales of consumer goods and services


January’s total retailed sales of consumer goods and services were at an estimation of 209.5 trillion dongs, rose 2.2percent from the previous month and by 8.1% from the same period last year. it would be 1.0% if the inflation were excluded. Of which, the trade business gained 160.3 trillion dongs, represented 76.5% and rose 5.3percent from last year’ same period; the hotel and restaurant 25.1 trillion dongs, 12% and 16.4%; the service 22.5 trillion dongs, 10.7% and 24%; the tourist 1.7 trillion dongs, 0.8% and reduced by 11.4% respectively.

Exports-Imports

January’s export turnovers reached estimated 10.1 billion USD, declined 2.5percent from the previous month, of which the domestic economic sector reached 3.5 billion USD, decreased by 8.5%; the FDI sector (including crude oil) 6.6 billion USD, decreased by 1%. Compared with the same period in 2012, January’s export turnovers rose 43.2percent, of which the domestic economic sector increased by 36.1% and the FDI sector (including crude oil) by 47.3%. For exported market in January, EU was the largest one with 1.3 billion USD, rose 51.8percent from the same period in 2012; following were the United States with 1.2 billion USD, rose 41.1percent; ASEAN with 975 million USD, rose 44.5 percent; Japan 875 million USD, rose 20 percent; China 688 million USD, rose 54 percent.

January’s import turnovers reached estimated 9.9 billion USD, rose 0.4percent from the previous month, of which the FDI sector reached 5.5 billion USD, rose 6percent; the domestic economic sector decreased by 5.9%. Compared with last year’ same period, January’s import turnovers rose 42.3percent, of which the domestic economic sector reached 4.3 billion USD and rose 31percent; the FDI sector reached 5.6 billion USD and rose 52.7percent. For imported market in January, China was the largest one with 1.6 billion USD, rose 59percent from last year’ same period; ASEAN with 1.3 billion USD, increased by 24%; Republic of Korea 1 billion USD, by 42.8%; Japan 654 million USD, by 45.2%; EU 541 million USD, by 56.6%; the United States 326 million USD, by 41.7%.

Trade surplus in January was estimated 200 million USD, equaling 2% of export turnovers.

Consumer price indexes (CPI)

January’s CPI rose 1.25percent from the previous month (the rise was not so high when it was in the period before Tet) and by 7,07% from the same period in 2012. This month’s increase in CPI was due to consumption needs for Tet on one hand , and the adjustment of medical service charges by some provinces according Joint Circular No. 04/2012/TTLT-BYT-BTC dated 29/2/2012 on the other hand, that made medical service charges increase, shared 0.44percent in the country’s general CPI than the general were. Groups of goods and services with higher CPI than the general were medicines and medical service by 7.4% (medical service by 9.5%); catering and related service by 1.34% (grain food by 0.15%; foodstuff by 1.96%; outdoor eating and drinking by 0.6%); garments, hats and footgear by 1.3%. Other groups with CPI below 1% or decreased were family appliances by 0.54% up; drinks and tobacco by 0.42% up; housing and construction materials by 0.36% up; culture, entertainment, tourism by 0.33% up; education by 0.3% up; transport by 0.03% up; postal and communicational service by 0.05% down.

January’s gold index declined 1.73percent from the previous month; and rose 2.37percent from the same period in 2012. January’ s USD index declined 0.08 percent from the previous month and by 1.09% from the same period in 2012.

Carriage of passengers and cargos

January’s passenger carriage was at an estimation of 254.8 million arrivals, rose 12.5percent and 11.2 billion passengers-kilometers rose 10.3percent from the same period in 2012. Of which central transport reached 3.6 million participants, raised 1.8% and 2.8 billion passengers-kilometers rose 9.1%; local transport reached 251.2 million participants, raised 12.7% and 8.5 billion passengers-kilometers rose 10.7%. In January, passengers carriage by land reached estimated 235.7 million participants, rose 13.2percent and 8.3 billion passengers-kilometers rose 10.4percent from last year’ same period; by river: 16.4 million participants, rose 4.9percent and 360.1 million passengers-kilometers  rose 10.3percent; by air: 1.3 million participants, rose 0.4percent and 2.2 billion passengers-kilometers rose 8.7percent; by sea: 0.5 million participants, rose 1.2percent and 30.2 million passengers-kilometers rose 1.4percent; by rail: 0.9 million participants, rose 0.9percent and 353.5 million passengers-kilometers rose 19.3percent.

January’s cargo carriage was at an estimation of 74.8 million tons, rose 9.6percent and15.9 billion tons-kilometers rose 4.4percent from last year’ same period, of which the domestic transport gained 71.8 million tons, rose 9.9percent and 5.5 billion tons.km rose 9.5percent; overseas transport reached 3 million tons, rose 2,4percent and 10.4 billion tons.km rose 1.9percent. Land transport gained 57.2 million tons, rose 10.9percent and 3 billion tons.km rose 10.8percent; river: 13,9 million tons, rose 4.9percent and 1.3 tá»· billion tons.km rose 6.3percent; sea: 3 million tons, rose 1percent and 11.2 billion tons.km rose 1.4percent; rail: 0.7 million tons, rose 63.8percent and 356.6 million tons.km rose 70.3percent.

International visitors to Viet Nam

January’s international visitors to Viet Nam were at an estimation of 651,800 arrivals, rose 2.2percent from the same period last year. Of which, visitors coming for tourist purposes were 397,000 arrivals, increased by 6.4%; for business purposes 111,000 arrivals by 0.9%; for visiting relatives 111,600 arrivals, decreased by 7%; for other purposes 32,300 arrivals, declined 7.8percent.

Social issues

Farmers food shortage

In January 2013, the country had 30,900 households suffered from food shortage, decreased by 53% against the same period last year, which were in proportion to 125,400 hunger persons, decreased by 53.4%. Food shortage focused mainly in the northern midland and mountainous region, North Center and Central Coast and Central Highland. To overcome the problem, all administrative levels and sectors provided hunger families with 500 tons of food and over 350 million dongs.

Epidemic diseases and food poisoning

In January, the country had 2,600 cases of hemorrhagic fever; 9 cases of viral encephalitis; 4 cases of typhoid and 2,900 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease; 5 cases of food poisoning infecting 63 persons. Also in January 2013, more 1,400 cases infected with HIV were found, bringing total HIV-infected persons over the country as of 17/01/2013 to 263,600, of which 108,000 persons turned to AIDS and 54,200 persons died of AIDS.

Traffic accidents

According to preliminary reports (from 16/12/2012 to 15/01/2013), the country had 972 cases of traffic accidents, killing 890 persons and injuring 580 others. Compared to the same period last year, cases of traffic accident decreased by 6.2%, the death by 4.3% and the injured by 24%. On average, each day in the month, the country had 31 cases of traffic accident, killing 29 persons and injuring 19 others.

Natural calamity

Typhoon No.1 together with very and damaging cold weather occurred in the month impacted much on production and living condition in some provinces. Natural calamity made 24 died and gone missing; 250 ha of vegetables flooded and damaged; over 500 animals died. Total value of damage caused by calamity in the month was at an estimation of over7 billion dongs.

Environmental protection

In January, the country had 182 cases of fire and explosion, rose 9.6percent from the previous month, which killed 11 persons and damaged a lot of properties valuing over 25 billion dongs. Also in the month, functioning authorities discovered 530 cases violating environmental sanitation rules in 35 provinces and cities, of which 259 cases were fined nearly 4 billion dongs.
